Outage #2

The
lights overhead flicker, sputter, sigh
until finally we are enveloped in darkness
No television screen to illuminate
the pitch-black hollows of my bedroom
No silver alarm clock flashing the time -
only the shadows that dance on the ceiling
and the surging melody of the crickets' midnight song
Cold air lingers above my darkened bed -
the only remnants of the air conditioner's low hum
Soon, a summer swelter will replace the chill,
leaving my skin moist, my face burning
But for now I enjoy the goosebumps prickling my arms
and the shivers that pass down my spine
